Last minute news [Humadoc] Mesa de Diálogo finalizada
Reanudada la Mesa de Diálogo el día lunes 14/Dic/2009 a las 16 hs que con
un pequeño cuarto intermedio, sesionó hasta las 20 aproximadamente,
pasando a un nuevo cuarto intermedio para el martes a las 15, se lamenta
informar que no se llegó a un acuerdo que permitiera solucionar el
conflicto.
Toda nueva información será comunicada por este medio.

ENGLISH ALLOPHONIC TRANSCRIPTIONS: NOV 04
Hello again!
General guidelines:
1) Transcribe the texts (phonemes only) and check new words with the pronunciation dictionary.
Write on every other line and carry out any necessary correction with a colour pen.
2)Mark allophones, working with your booklet notes at all times.
Specific instructions: Texts taken from Sounds English (O´Connor & Fletcher 1989)
1) Unit 5: Transcribe tasks 22a and 42a, marking allophones of AFFRICATES and SEMIVOWELS alone.
2) Unit 6: Transcribe tasks 2.a and 3.3, marking allophones of FRICATIVE consonants only.
3) Unit 10: Transcribe task 41a and mark allophones of PLOSIVE consonants only.
4) Unit 11: Trancribe task 22a and 41, marking allophones of LIQUIDS only.
5) Unit 15: Transcribe tasks 4a and 5, marking allophones of NASAL consonants alone.
Please leave your papers in the "Phonetics" box at DLM.

Oral presentations again
Dear students
I've just posted the schedule for the oral presentations (mid-term exam No.2.You should sign in there.There's a guideline available at the xerox room.Read instructions carefully.
The written exam will be administered on November 16th (Monday group) and November 17th(Tuesday group).The exam will comprise dictation + allophonic transcriptions both in English and Spanish.All allophones will be considered. Topmark for this part: 10 mistakes in all.Topmark for dictation: 25 mistakes.
Make-up for oral presentation will be Monday 23rd at 12am.As for the written make-up exam, it'll be administered on Monday 30th (12 to 2 pm) (Dictation + allophonic transcription).

There will be no class from November 2nd through 6th due to A Linguistics Seminar to be held at Facultad de Humanidades.Therefore:
1. pls get the Guidelines for the oral presentation at the Students' Union.
2.if you have any queries about it, I'll be answering questions at Departamento.We can meet there or you can contact me via the blog.

Only transcribe the introduction, "previous work", "appearances and sources" and "transcription system".

LAST-MINUTE NEWS!!
A LOS DEPARTAMENTOS DE LA FACULTAD DE HUMANIDADES, por favor, sirvanse comunicar a los docentes de la Facultad de Humanidades lo que se detalla mas abajo:
A través de la Resolución de Rectorado 558/09 el Rector de la Universidad Nacional de Mar del Plata dispone el cese de las actividades académicas a partir del día de las 16:00 horas del día de la fecha, motivo por el cual, también en esta Unidad Académica se suspenden todas las actividades.
Ante la situación de estar en las últimas semanas de clases que implicaba toma de parciales y recuperatorios, esta Secretaría Académica informa a los docentes de las distintas cátedras que las actividades de evaluación sean previstas en las semanas del 3 al 14 de agosto del corriente.
La finalización del primer cuatrimestre por tanto, sería el día 14 de agosto, debiendo los docentes elevar la entrega de informe de regularidades a partir de esa fecha (o antes de la fecha preestablecida) y hasta el 18 de agosto.
Los docentes pueden prever formas alternativas de evaluación para el cierre de las cursadas (parciales domiciliarios, consultas por correo electrónico, trabajos monográficos, etc).
Debido a que es imposible realizar las actas en tiempo y forma, las mesas examinadoras de la semana comprendida entre el 3 y el 7 de agosto se suspenden. Los estudiantes deberán inscribirse en el turno de examen que va desde el 24 de agosto al 4 de setiembre.
No se modifica el calendario correspondiente a la 2° parte del año 2009.

Please do the first exercise ( pre- watching activities scene 1). The students that have their practical classes on Tuesday and Thursday with me , will watch the video at the lab at the usual time ( from 13 to 15). Students having practical classes on Thursday with Cristina will have to check the blog again on Wednesday to confirm the room.

FOURTH SET OF TRANSCRIPTIONS (submission date June 8)
Hello!
Students who have failed to submit any of the previous sets of transcriptions must hand in the fourth set.
This time, we are going to work with late Professor Ladefoged´s article "Phonetics and phonology in the last 50 years", available online at:
http://www.cs.indiana.edu/~port/HDphonol/LadefogedMITSoundToSense.2004.pdf
Please only transcribe the first two sections: abstract and featural beginnings. You don´t need to use a phonetics font for this transcription. There are no keys for this text, students are expected to check new words in the pronunciation dictionary and mark mistakes in red or green.
Submission date will be June 8

There has been a change in the original schedules for those who are taking the oral exam this Monday 18th. The 12 pm to 2 pm board will start at 1 pm and the board that originally started at 2 pm. will start approximately at 2.30 pm. - General characteristics of consonants according to voicing,place and manner of articulation.
-Vowels: classification. Formal description of /i:/ /I/ /e/ ash, short o and long o.
- Phonetics (branches)/Phonology
-Allophones/phonemes/Complementary distribution/free variation
-Organs of speech (the speech mechanism)
-General differences between vowels and consonants
- Weak and strong forms
- Inflections

Today we worked with two full passages for dictation. They were explained and corrected in class. We´ll be practising the same tomorrow and new texts will be given next week.
I also explained what the oral mid-term would be about.It will consist in speaking for five minutes on a chosen topic. There's a Five-talk Guideline at the Xerox Room (Humanidades)which should be submitted on the day of the test.
Schedule for the oral exam will be posted during this week.

On Monday 13th and Tuesday 14th we revised theoretical concepts like voicing, the use of the IPA and we worked with inflections' rules: plural, 3rd person Simple Present, genitive case and Past tense of regular verbs.
We also transcribed sentences using phonetic script and did a short dictation.

There are four sorts of task:

HELP Phonetic Flash is a collection of JavaScript programs for Microsoft Internet Explorer 4+ and Netscape 4+. It is intended for anyone who wishes to improve their knowledge of phonetic symbols.
There are four sorts of task:
Labels : You see a symbol and have to choose the correct voice, place, manner label
Symbols: You see a label and have to choose the appropriate symbol
Words: You see a word and have to choose an appropriate symbol
Hit and miss: You see a symbol and a list of words. You have to choose the words which contain the sound symbolised
